SEATTLE/Sept. 23, 2002 -- Comerica Bank-California has announced that it is making substantial contributions to two very deserving community-based organizations in the Seattle area. The grants are the bank’s way of supporting the work these agencies do in providing a critical service to the community.
Executives from the agencies selected will receive contribution checks during special ceremonies in Seattle and Kirkland. The contributions are part of a $530,000 grant program being implemented by Comerica in which a total of 16 organizations from the state of Washington and Northern California will be recognized for their services to the community.
The ceremonies are being held concurrently with contribution events in Los Angeles benefiting three organizations. The West Angeles Community Development Corporation and the Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation will each receive a grant from Comerica for $40,000, and $30,000 has been earmarked for the Pacific Asian Consortium in Employment (PACE). The formal presentation of the grants took place Monday, Sept. 23 at Comerica Bank-California’s Inglewood office.
In Seattle, the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority received a grant for $25,000. The check presentation took place Monday, Sept. 23 at the Legacy House. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Otis Watson, Comerica Bank-California’s Community Reinvestment Act officer, will present a check for $25,000 to Maureen Brotherton, president of Teens in Public Service. The presentation takes place in Comerica’s Kirkland office.
"This contribution is just our way of saying 'thank you' to a few local organizations that work so hard in our communities to help provide technical assistance for those who need it," said Comerica Bank-California President and CEO Mike Fulton. "Hopefully this contribution -- and others like it from fellow corporations -- will help provide ongoing assistance to these extremely worthwhile organizations."

For 25 years, the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority has been leading the efforts to revitalize the International District in Seattle, Washington, through housing, economic and community development. Currently, the organization owns and/or manages seven buildings that include 325 units of low-income housing and 187,000 square feet of commercialetail space. In 1998, Phase 1 of the International District Village Square Project was completed. Phase 1 is a mixed-use facility including a childcare center, health clinic, job training, social services, retail, parking and Legacy House - an assisted living and independent apartment facility. Phase 2 will be a new construction project located at the surface parking lot adjacent to the first phase.

Teens In Public Service (TIPS) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing future leaders committed to their communities. TIPS selects low-to-moderate teen leaders and matches them with charitable organizations. The charities receive the teen workforce at no cost to them and the teens end up with more than a paycheck. The experience fosters a sense of leadership and responsibility to one’s community. Moreover, the experience helps to develop the teens into future business and community leaders. In 1997, the organization placed 11 teen interns in local Seattle charities. This summer, it placed 48 teen interns from 21 different schools within the Seattle area.
