Comerica Bank Opens Banking Center In Historic Penobscot Building

DETROIT, Feb. 12, 2018 – Comerica Bank opened a banking center in the historic Penobscot Building today, completing the relocation of its nearby Fort-Washington banking center. Comerica Bank is returning to its roots with the opening in the Penobscot Building. Comerica’s predecessor Detroit Savings Bank moved to the original 13-story building in 1906. The Penobscot building also housed the main office of Manufacturers Bank when the bank was formed in 1933. Manufacturers merged with Comerica in 1992.

“The Penobscot Building is one of Detroit’s most iconic landmarks that has served as a destination for Detroiters and a home for the city’s businesses for more than a century,” said Michael T. Ritchie, president of Comerica Bank-Michigan. “With the rich, intertwined history of Comerica and the Penobscot Building in Detroit, it was the perfect location to continue to serve our downtown clients while supporting Detroit’s continuing revitalization.”

Comerica’s new Penobscot Building office is managed by Josh Smith, a 20-year banking veteran. Smith, who joined Comerica 12 years ago, transferred to the Fort-Washington banking center in 2017. Comerica's Penobscot Building location is a 4,000 square-foot full-service banking center and includes a walk-up ATM, night depository and safe deposit boxes.
