The Consumer Protection Alert brochures are available in the management areas of Comerica branches. In addition to describing the different ways thieves try to trick consumers, the brochure suggests ways consumers can protect themselves and lists resources to contact if they have been victimized.

"The number of ways in which thieves try to steal your identity is on the rise," notes Dianne Shovely of Comerica's Fraud Prevention and Investigative Services group. "We developed the Consumer Protection Alert Brochure to help our customers be alert to the ways a criminal may try to trick them so hopefully they won't become victims, also."

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing types of consumer fraud. Banking Strategies magazine reported that an update to the Federal Trade Commission's 2003 Identity Theft Report will show that there were over 9 million victims of identity theft in the last twelve months.

In addition to developing the Consumer Protection Alert brochure, Comerica has information on identity theft and other scams on its website.
